The Social Research Foundation is conducting a survey to ascertain the level of interest from the deaf & HOH community for the following project.

This is just a concept pending feedback of sufficient interest from the community.


  1. 1.CHOOSE A VIDEO - from youtube or Google Video (GV).  See our tips on this below. Again, we do not yet offer this service. This explanation is for information purposes only at this time.

  2. 2.ORDER FORM - at our website giving us the URL or address at the top of the video's web page

  3. 3.TURNAROUND TIME - 24 hours or immediately if the video is already captioned by us

  4. 4.SERVICES - we would hire and train disabled individuals capable of doing the captioning. So this is a "Win-Win" where both parties gain value

  5. 5.FEES - our goal is similar to an iTunes or ringtone download, depending on video length. Our tests show it takes about 25 - 30 minutes to add captions to a ten-minute video. Once you pay for a video, you would have free unlimited access to it from the same computer.

  6. 6.LEGAL - some videos may not be available for captioning, e.g. if it contains copyrighted material



FAQ


Can I choose ANY video on youtube or Google Video?

That is the idea but again be aware if it is copyrighted (see “Tips” section below). We will approach companies with a copyright if you want but this can obviously take time, perhaps weeks or longer. We have no control over their corporate legal response.


What if I don’t like the video?

That is why we say choose carefully. Once we receive an order and pay for the captioning, we cannot offer a refund. But, this will only be a dollar for a few dollars anyway. Plus, those videos already captioned and rated highly will be retained so future users, including you, will be able to view videos highly rated.


How do I know if the video content is good before I buy?

Fortunately, there are several ways which are in our “Tips” section below.


What if I want to see the same video again?

You can see the vide with captions as many times as you like from the computer you originally used. Most videos are “how to” so you probably will not need to see it more than a few times. If you need to see it again from another computer, it would only cost about a dollar anyway.


How do I pay for this, with a credit card?

PayPal. You can open an account for free at paypal.com. We don’t charge enough for use with a credit card!

TIPS FOR CHOOSING VIDEOS TO CAPTION

We want you to be satisfied with your order. We cannot give a refund of your fee once you place an order because we must pay our captioner. It is important you choose carefully, even though the cost is so low.


Here are some tips with a screen shot taken from the youtube site with three videos from the search “How to sew.” No single tip is enough but taken together should be more helpful.


First, view the video yourself. Judge the quality and visual presentation for yourself. Then:


Look at the RIGHT column for the following:

  1. 1.Views = the number of times this video has been viewed

  2. 2.Stars = ratings by those who have seen it

  3. 3.Length = just to give you an idea of the cost for captions as we charge based on the time length of the video

  4. 4.Copyright = while there is no official notification of a commercial/copyrighted video, expertvillage.com is clearly one with many videos posted to youtube.
